A few things nudge the line one way or the other. A crew of two or three flips it the other way, because there are enough hands to keep laying while one person mixes. Access matters too: a tight back garden with steps may make hauling and cleaning a mixer more trouble than it saves, while an open site with room to work favours the machine.
Rent or buy?
For a one-off job, hire the mixer. A day or weekend rate is a fraction of the purchase price, and you hand back the cleaning and storage headache with the machine. Buying only makes sense if you will use it across many jobs, in which case the cost spreads out and having it on hand is worth it. Either way, the mixer has to earn its keep against the alternative, which is a tub, a hoe and your own time. On a genuinely small job, that alternative usually wins.
How to load a paddle mixer
For mortar, use a paddle-type mortar or plaster mixer, where paddles fold the mix inside a stationary tub. A tumbling drum mixer is built for concrete and tends to separate mortar rather than blend it. - Add most of the water. With the paddles turning, pour in about three quarters of your water. This stops dry material caking on the paddles and tub.
- Add about half the sand. Let it wet through before you add more.

- Add the rest of the sand. Let the mix pull together into a uniform body.
- Adjust water to consistency. Add the last of the water in small amounts until the mortar holds a ridge.
- Mix, then discharge. Run it 3 to 5 minutes after the last material, then tip it into a barrow or tub.
The common error is dumping all the sand, cement and water in together at the start. That cakes dry material on the paddles, mixes unevenly, and strains the motor.
Why paddle beats drum for mortar is worth understanding, because a lot of people reach for the concrete mixer they already own. A drum mixer tumbles the load, which throws heavy sand to the bottom and lets the lighter cement paste ride separately, so mortar comes out patchy and you fight to blend it. A paddle mixer holds the tub still and folds the material through itself, which suits the sticky, cohesive body of mortar. If a drum is genuinely all you have, load water first, add material slowly, and watch the mix closely, but expect to work harder for an even batch than a paddle would give you.
Mixer safety. Pouring dry cement and sand releases respirable silica dust, which OSHA treats as a real health hazard, so wear a dust mask or respirator and load in open air. Wet mortar is caustic, so keep gloves and eye protection on. Never put your hands or a tool into a running drum or tub, and stop the machine before you clear or clean it.
Mixing time and over-mixing
More mixing is not better. Run a mortar mixer for about 3 to 5 minutes after the last material goes in, long enough for a uniform, workable body and no longer.
Over-mixing whips air into the mortar. It can come out light and fluffy, which changes how it lays and can reduce quality. If you see the mortar growing airy and voluminous, you have run it too long. Mix to consistency, then stop and discharge. The consistency you are aiming for is the same on either method, and the field tests apply just as well to a machine batch as a hand one.
One real strength of a mixer is batch-to-batch consistency, but only if you feed it the same way each time. Load the same materials in the same order with the same water, and every batch comes out matching, which shows in even joints and even colour across a wall. Whatever you mix, the working window still counts. A mixer lets you make more mortar faster, which makes it easier to mix more than the crew can lay, so keep an eye on how long the batch has before it is beyond retempering.
Cleaning the mixer
Clean the tub or drum before the mortar sets, not once the job is over and it has hardened. Set mortar is far harder to chip out and can foul the paddles.
- Between batches, scrape down the tub so build-up does not harden on the paddles.
- At the end, add water and a few shovels of gravel or coarse sand, run the mixer, and let the aggregate scour the drum, then tip and rinse.
- Wash into a settling bucket or a bunded area, not into a drain, since mortar slurry sets in pipes and the runoff is caustic.
A mixer left to set solid is a long, miserable job the next morning, and sometimes the end of the machine. If you have hired it, that hardened mortar can also cost you your deposit, so budget the last fifteen minutes of the day for cleaning rather than squeezing in one more batch.
