Hand mixing does not take much kit. Gather these before you open a bag:
- A mixing tub, mortar tray or a flat mixing board (a “spot board”). A wheelbarrow works for larger batches.

Mix the dry materials first
Always blend the sand, cement and lime while they are still dry. Turn the pile over with your hoe until it is one even grey colour with no streaks of pale sand or dark cement. This usually takes 2 to 3 minutes.
Dry blending matters more than it looks. If you add water before the cement is spread evenly through the sand, you get pockets of rich, sticky paste next to pockets of weak, sandy mortar in the same batch. The step-by-step method
Once the dry mix is uniform, work through these six steps in order.
- Measure the dry materials. With your one consistent bucket, load the sand, cement and lime into the tub in the right proportion for your type, for example 1:1:6 for Type N.
- Blend them dry. Fold everything together until the colour is even, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Make a well and add water. Push the dry mix to the sides, pour a small amount of clean water into the middle, and pull the dry material into the water bit by bit.
- Mix to a workable body. Chop, fold and turn until the mortar is smooth and holds together, adding water in small splashes until it looks like thick peanut butter. Give it about 5 minutes.
- Slake, then remix. Let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes so the cement and lime soak up the water, then mix again for a minute or two and nudge the water if it needs it.

Add water in stages, never all at once
Water is the one part of mortar with no single correct number. The amount changes with how damp your sand is, the weather, and the mortar type, so treat any figure as a starting point and finish by eye.
Add water a little at a time and stop often to look at the mix. Let it slake, then retemper on the board
Slaking is the short rest after the first mix. Leaving the mortar for 5 to 10 minutes lets the cement grains and the lime take up water fully, which makes the batch smoother and more workable without any extra water. Skip it and the mortar often feels stiff, then tempts you into adding water it did not really need.
As you lay, the mortar on your board slowly stiffens because water evaporates.
